New PMP exam is coming - how will this affect you?

By Suzanne Cureton

From 31 Aug 2011 the PMP exam will change.  Here we summarise the good news and the bad news, and keep you informed of what changes you need to be aware of.

Firstly the good news:

  1.  The exam will still be based on the PMBOK 4th Edition.
  2. There are no changes to the eligibility criteria.
  3. The format of the exam will not change.

Now the bad news:

  1. Project managers need to be familiar with the findings of the role delineation study which has identified changes to the definition of the role of Project Manager, which is the basis of the changes to the PMP exam.
  2. About 30% of the questions will change.  There will be new questions developed, and some of the existing questions removed, resulting from the new project Manager role definition
  3. There will no longer be a separate set of questions on professional and social responsibility content (based on PMI’s Ethical and Professional Conduct) This is now seen as an integrated part of the day to day role of the project manager and hence is being integrated across all the areas that the PMP exam covers.

The new distribution of questions will be on five domains (instead of six) as follows:

  • Initiating – 13%
  • Planning – 24%
  • Executing – 30%
  • Monitoring and controlling – 25%
  • Closing – 8%

If you are considering doing the PMP exam this year our recommendation is that you do this before 31st August.
